 Humans are forgetful and ungrateful, this is what Silverstein is telling us. I saw in the comments that some people said that the tree was also to blame cause it gave a lot, so both characters in the story should be blamed. I don't dissent with them, but if you loved someone so much like the tree in the story, wouldn't you do this too?
