I went into The Shining, expecting an interesting horror novel but instead I got a dull charecter study.

This was my first King novel and given that this is probably his most popular work, I had high expectations. I expected being scared, being engaged in the story and most of all I expected being entertained. And I'm sorry if this is controversial but it failed to deliver any of those!

Stephen King, from what I've heard of him, likes to take his time and build a foundation for its stories and I'm fine with that, but the problem starts when the foundation itself is more interesting than the climax and the main plot of the book! 

Don't get me wrong, I loved the idea of using horror as a tool to explore human emotions, especially somethings like anger and being addicted, things that can easily be scary in real life even without the presence of a haunted  hotel, and I loved [SPOILER ALERT the ending of The Overlook and how beautifully it was synced with the explosion of Jack's anger, but those weren't enough for me to enjoy The Shining, especially because they happened at the beginning and the end of the book. 

I was honestly soooo happy to be done with it. 

I didn't like this book but I will try King again, and next time, I'll lower my expectations.
