توضیحات

She was known to the world as Emily Doe when she stunned millions with a letter. Brock Turner had been sentenced to just six months in county jail after he was found sexually assaulting her on Stanford’s campus. Her victim impact statement was posted on BuzzFeed, where it instantly went viral–viewed by eleven million people within four days, it was translated globally and read on the floor of Congress; it inspired changes in California law and the recall of the judge in the case. Thousands wrote to say that she had given them the courage to share their own experiences of assault for the first time. Now she reclaims her identity to tell her story of trauma, transcendence, and the power of words. It was the perfect case, in many ways–there were eyewitnesses, Turner ran away, physical evidence was immediately secured. But her struggles with isolation and shame during the aftermath and the trial reveal the oppression victims face in even the best-case scenarios. Her story illuminates a culture biased to protect perpetrators, indicts a criminal justice system designed to fail the most vulnerable, and, ultimately, shines with the courage required to move through suffering and live a full and beautiful life.Know My Name will forever transform the way we think about sexual assault, challenging our beliefs about what is acceptable and speaking truth to the tumultuous reality of healing. It also introduces readers to an extraordinary writer, one whose words have already changed our world. Entwining pain, resilience, and humor, this memoir will stand as a modern classic.

Almost every woman and girl that I know including myself has been sexauly assaulted in one way or another but how many of them said anything about it? not that many. How many of them went to court to get justice? maybe a few. Now How many of them actually got that justice? even less.

Chanel Miller was one of those women. She had been sexually assaulted when she was unconscious. She went to court, she won the jury but she still didn't get the justice she was looking for since the man who assaulted her only got 3 months in jail.

So she wrote this book in hopes of shedding some light on the corrupted, sexist and racist justice system of America. And maybe even more important than that, she wrote to show us how we, as a society perceive victims of sexaul assault.

" She shouldn't have worn that short dress"
" She got so drunk that she passed out? well she must have seen it coming"
" Oh come one she wasn't even raped, why is she being so dramatic?"
" Yeah she shouldn't have gone to that dark alley"
We ask these questions from victims but we never stop to ask ourselves:
" Does wearing a short dress mean I'm asking  to be assaulted?" NO!
" So she passed out, why did he feel ok to penetrate her privacy?"
" Does she have to be fucking raped to take her injuries, mentally and physically seriously?"
" Why didn't he make that alley a safe place for her by not fucking assaulting her?"

We always put the cursor on the victim, questioning her motives, pitying the man who assaulted her, saying he was such a "promising young man" but not once we say she was a young woman with a bright future ahead and now this incident may have ruined her chance of happiness and greatness forever.

Chanel Miller with her beautiful prose, insightful thinking and her honest and raw voice, calls out anyone who was, and is in the wrong. Her sentences, her storytelling and her greatness brought tears to my eyes several times and made me unbelievably angry because of the way she was being treated.

This book is a must read. For all women and men who have been a victim, and for all women and men who still doubt those victims.
