"Even though the Dark Queens were absent from my books, they were in plain sight throughout my childhood as the women I was warned against becoming. The wicked stepmother in my fairy tales, the haughty Jezebel who was preached against in church, the fat lady singing at the opera: all were objects of hatred or ridicule. Between the silence of suppressed history and the oppressive blare of stereotypes, what space remains? But the ghosts of Brunhild and Fredegund refuse to stay silent. They surface relentlessly, determined to be heard. Is this because the queens have been robbed—of a voice? Of recognition? Of a connection with the living? Or is this because we have been robbed—of foundational narratives about female power?"
