Almost every book that I've read containing LGBTQ+ rep, focused on discovering one's sexuality and the problems of being in a gay relationship in different societies. Never have I seen an author focusing on self hatred when discovering one's sexuality. It's definitely because I haven't read that many books in 
LGBTQ+ literature but nevertheless it was refreshing to look at this problem from a different angle. 

The angle that Baldwin chose, abled him to dig even deeper in other equally important issues such as Feminism, the American dream, toxic masculinity, the effects of an oppressive society and a whole lot more. 

Reading Giovanni's Room exhibited to me the kind of an amazing and talented writer James Baldwin is. An author with exceptional prose that allowed him to explore the deepest and most tragic sides of his characters; therefore I have a high opinion of him as a gifted and skilled author but this book, for whatever reason, failed to touch my heart. I respect the craft and I cherish the experience of reading it, but I don't think it's gonna have a significant spot in my beloved classics list.
